The coronavirus outbreak has led to essential food items like milk, bread, eggs and meat being depleted at grocery stores across the country. This comes as Americans shift from eating out to more meals at home. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal reassures consumers that the food supply is safe and there is no concern about food shortages.
He says there will be a slowdown in demand as Americans shift from eating out at restaurants and social distancing forces more events and gatherings to being cancelled.
VanderWal says when the COVID-19 pandemic dies down he expects a snapback in demand for all agricultural products and hopefully that will stimulate prices.
He says they’re also concerned about losing export demand and Farm Bureau economists also warn of the possibility of the global economy slowing down enough to start a recession.
