In his speech to the nation this week President Donald Trump touched on a pair of issues effecting agriculture. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal says while the President didn’t give a lot of specifics he did mention the need for tax and immigration reform.

He says the President when bringing up immigration talked about a merit based system and that that makes sense in terms of having immigrants who are contributing to the economy while they’re here.

VanderWal says most immigrants who are working on farms and ranches in the United States are already contributing in a positive way.

VanderWal says he’s not in favor of giving immigrants automatic citizenship, that they should have to go through the process. However he is hoping they will move ahead with some type of guest worker program.
