Kansas Congressman Roger Marshall met with Cuba’s President this week and talked about trade opportunities between Cuba and the United States. Marshall says the U.S. can and should be Cuba’s number one supplier of commodities like sorghum, soy, wheat and corn. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke is encouraged he’s calling for that and met with Cuba’s leader.

He says additional market opportunities like with Cuba are positive for U.S. farmers who’ve been experiencing an economic decline.

Sombke says when human rights issues aren’t dealt with, people end up leaving those countries for better opportunities.

Sombke is pleased Representative Marshall is backing the elimination of outdated restrictions between the U.S. and Cuba and has sponsored legislation such as the Cuba Trade Act and the Cuban Agricultural Exports Act.
