For the first time in close to 50 years Nebraska does not have a Senator on the Agriculture Committee. That’s after Senator Ben Sasse says he’s leaving the panel to serve on the Armed Services and Judiciary Committees. He’s also keeping his seat on the Banking Committee. That move concerns Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen, who says the state has already lost ag representation on Congressional committees.
He says the Senate Ag Committee seat is an important one for Nebraska.
Hansen says the timing of Sasse leaving the Senate Ag Committee is not good because a new farm bill will be written soon and it will have a large impact on Nebraska’s farmers and ranchers.
Senate Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas promises quick action on the farm bill to come after the Senate acts on the President-elect’s cabinet nominees.
