Farm groups are suing the Environmental Protection Agency over their decision to revoke all tolerances of chlorpyrifos. American Soybean Association Chairman Kevin Scott says they are frustrated with EPA’s disregard for its own science confirming the crop protection tool can be used safely, effectively, and without dietary or environmental risk. The stakeholders are first seeking an injunction of the rule to prevent the damage banning the product would cause.
Scott says the ban on chlorpyrifos will take effect on the February 28 implementation date and farmers can’t afford to lose this important crop protection product.
He says ultimately they want EPA to vacate the rule where it conflicts with the science and was found safe.
He says EPA’s proposed interim decision back in December 2020 for the re-registration of chlorpyrifos found 11 high-benefit, low-risk crop uses1 that the agency was confident ‘will not pose potential risks of concern. So the groups question how EPA can now deny all uses.
