Farm Groups Pleased King Amendment Killed in Farm Bill

Farm Groups Pleased King Amendment Killed in Farm Bill

Family Farm Action and the Organization for Competitive Markets are pleased farm bill conferees stripped the King Amendment from the farm bill. That measured offered by Iowa Congressman Steve King was intended to protect interstate commerce through the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution. OCM Executive Director Joe Maxwell says had that been left in the legislation and approved it would have struck down state’s rights.

He says states are in better position to regulate their agricultural practices than the federal government.

Maxwell says any violation of the Commerce Clause should be decided by the courts not through federal legislation.

The Family Farm Action coalition gathered thousands of petition signatures opposing the King Amendment.
