Farm groups including the National Farmers Union are extremely disappointed with President Trump’s proposed budget calling for a $4.7 billion cut to the USDA’s discretionary budget. NFU President Roger Johnson says President Trump doesn’t understand the financial stress that’s currently impacting agriculture and it’s fortunate it’ll be up to Congress to pass a budget rather than the President.
The President’s budget calls for cuts in conservation programs and food aid, county-level staff, rural water initiatives and some NASS reports. He says that will hurt American agriculture.
The President’s budget not only cuts the USDA budget by $4.7 billion, it calls for $54 billion in defense spending. Johnson says that just hurts the overall U.S. economy.
President Trump’s budget leaves the SNAP benefits intact, but cuts WIC by $187 million.
