NCGA and Other Farm Groups Disappointed With Mexican Import Tariffs

Farm groups are disappointed with President Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday to put a 5 percent tariffs on all goods imported from Mexico starting June 10 to stem illegal immigration. National Corn Grower’s Association President and Nebraska grower Lynn Chrisp says the tariffs are a hindrance to free trade with their top corn market.

He says the move may stifle efforts in Congress to ratify the USMCA. It comes after the earlier lifting of the steel and aluminum tariffs that NCGA was hoped might help move the trade pact.

Chrisp says his group is still trying to figure out what effect the latest tariff will have on corn exports to Mexico.

President Trump says the tariff will increase 5-percent per month until October 1 to a maximum of 25-percent, or until the illegal immigration problem is remedied. He says when that happens, the tariffs will be removed.
