The 12 member Trans Pacific Partnership Trade agreement is dead as far as the United States is concerned. Earlier President elect Donald Trump said he will withdraw from the pact and this week President Obama declared the deal dead for the U.S.
Both Trump and National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson believe TPP can be redone.
Johnson agrees with the President elect that trading is positive but that those agreements must have benefits if the U.S. is to be a part of them. He says the biggest trade problem the U.S. has is the current deficit it’s facing.
Johnson says any trade agreement can be renegotiated and just because a deal isn’t in place doesn’t mean countries stop trading.
Johnson says while China is an important customer of U.S. products it’s also guilty of currency manipulation. He says that needs to be resolved in order to facilitate good trade going forward.
