Minnesota Farmers Union leaders are trying to convince Governor Dayton to call a special session of the legislature to deal with unfinished regular session business including tax relief, bonding and transportation. Farmers Union Government Relations Director Thom Petersen says it’s good legislative leaders are still trying to resolve differences and work with the Governor for a special session.
He says the most likely issue that will get resolved if a special session is called is passage of some type of property tax relief legislation.
Petersen says his group would like to see the bonding bill passed as it contains the Rural Finance Authority which makes loans to farmers. Petersen say without funding that through a bonding measure the RFA will run out of money.
Petersen says that take on even more significance given the recent downturn in the farm economy and some producers needing to restructure debt.
