Farm Group President Sees Farm Bill Being Extended

Farm Group President Sees Farm Bill Being Extended

House-Senate conferees continue to discuss the farm bill. Most recently President Donald Trump called on them to pass legislation with work requirements in it for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP. South Dakota Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says the President calling for SNAP work requirements doesn’t match up to him saying he supports farmers.

He says he’s also concerned the conferees are trying to pass the farm bill quickly rather than taking the time to approve a solid measure to help agriculture.

Sombke doesn’t think Congress will approve a farm bill before the September 30 deadline and that an extension will be necessary.

The House included SNAP work requirements in its measure but the Senate did not. Now House Ag Chair Mike Conaway says he’s willing to compromise but not details have come out yet on that.
