Labor Department Officials announced this week that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has withdrawn its enforcement guidance that allowed inspectors on farms with fewer than 10 employees. That was after several Senators and Representatives called them on the carpet for imposing unauthorized regulatory burdens. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott Vanderwal who testified last week before Congress says OSHA was completely out of line with the rules.
Vanderwal says the decision is a major win for agriculture and an example of federal agencies overreaching their authority with unneeded regulations.
South Dakota Congresswoman Kristi Noem and Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns were among the many lawmakers who expressed concern with OSHA’s enforcement on small farms. Following that the U.S. Labor Department decided to update its guidance on grain bin safety enforcement.
