The South Dakota Farmers Union Policy committee met this week and approved a resolution to ask the state’s Congressional Delegation for help in assisting income strapped farmers and ranchers. Farmers Union President Doug Sombke says the committee is asking the state’s delegation to support farmers and ranchers by ending the trade tariffs, getting a farm bill passed immediately and finishing the remake of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
He says farmers suffering from low commodity prices need the help a farm bill can give them. Sombke says they’d rather get their income from the markets than from the government however.
Sombke says rather than fighting with China, the Trump Administration needed to get the NAFTA remake done first. He’s hoping they’ll pursue that deal and complete it as soon as possible.
Sombke says their policy committee members are very concerned about what may happen to young producers who are feeling the economic impacts caused by low commodity prices, the tariffs and the lack of trade agreements.
