Nebraska State Senator Tom Briese of Albion has introduced a proposal in the legislature to decouple Nebraska’s state tax system from some parts of the federal income tax system. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says it’s an interesting plan because it would make more money available for state use, including property tax relief.

He says Briese’s proposal that make more funding available for state use will be up before the legislature on Monday (July 27).

Hansen says the property tax relief effort has been hampered by the negative impacts of the pandemic and if state lawmakers don’t follow through with Briese’s plan and decouple, the state will lose even more money.

Several Nebraska agriculture groups including the state farmers union have prioritized property tax relief for this session.
