A coalition of Nebraska agriculture groups as well as the legislator’s Revenue Committee is trying to come up with a solution to address the high level of property taxes in the state. Nebraska Farmers Union President John Hansen says the only way to reduce property taxes and still be able to fund education is to increase both sales and income taxes.

He says it’s not possible to reduce property taxes by just cutting spending., as some lawmakers and the Governor supports.

Hansen says the problem with the current petition drive calling for property tax relief is that it leaves a large hole in the state budget., although the drive itself may spur lawmakers to address property taxes.

The Legislature’s Revenue Committee has been meeting discussing potential property tax relief options and has also been consulting with the Governor however no solution has yet been reached.
