United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai says one of her major policies with trade negotiations is to make carbon sequestration the new global standard. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal has some concerns with that policy in that it could make it difficult to achieve new or advance current trade deals.

He says by pushing forward carbon sequestration and climate change goals in trade pacts would complicate those negotiations.

VanderWal says it’s more important the Biden administration come forward with their trade goals and ensure that the current deal with China is working now that they’re purchasing more U.S. product and also implementing the USMCA deal.

VanderWal says the Biden trade team also needs to pursue getting involved with the Comprehensive Trans Pacific Partnership and solidifying our current bilateral agreement with Japan.
