The Senate has basically this week to come to terms on a national biotech labeling standard. Senate Ag Committee leaders Pat Roberts and Debbie Stabenow have been trying to iron out a compromise. National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson believes they’ll be able to achieve that. He says his group originally backed mandatory labeling but now wants a voluntary measure.
He says one of the sticking points on finding a compromise on labeling has to do with how meat is treated.
Johnson says most food companies have already started to try to comply with the Vermont State law set to go into effect July 1.
The clock is ticking on resolving the issue as even if the Senate passes a labeling measure the House is set to go on recess this Friday the 24th and won’t be able to consider any bills passed by the Senate.
