Farm Bureau Wetlands Specialist Advises Producers To Apply For Riparian Tax Break

The South Dakota Department of Revenue reminds landowners that applications for the riparian buffer strip property tax incentive must be submitted by October 15, 2020. South Dakota Farm Bureau Wetlands Specialist Wayne Smith says those producers who have that opportunity should apply for that tax incentive.

He says under the buffer strip regulation, only land within 120 feet of a listed lake, river or stream may be classified as a riparian buffer strip. Smith says you can go to the Revenue Department’s website in order to find out which waterways are classified as riparian areas.

Smith says having riparian buffer strips is a good way to protect the state’s water and a great environmental tool for producers.

Again the Department of Revenue’s interactive map can be accessed at their website at denr.sd.gov/datagis.aspx.
