The American Farm Bureau is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to take up a South Dakota case that could do away with internet retailer’s ongoing refusal to collect sales taxes. Some state and local governments do collect sales taxes from internet retailers, but American Farm Bureau tax advisor Pat Wolff says it’s a voluntary system, and one that hurts small, mom and pop retailers on Main Street.
Wolff says it means fewer off-farm jobs and longer trips to stores still open, with rural grocery and other stores slowly disappearing, especially in the Midwest. It also means revenue losses for state and local governments.
The Supreme Court must still decide whether to take the internet tax collecting case. The case is South Dakota versus Way Fair, Inc, Overstock.Com Inc, and Newegg Inc.
