The American Farm Bureau is urging lawmakers to pass the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st. Century Act. Nebraska Farm Bureau President Steve Nelson says there is a need in all areas of agriculture for highly trained technical workers.

Nelson says career and technical education and post high school job training and re training are essential in the economic viability of rural communities. He’s concerned with the recent economic downturn in the ag economy, workers will leave the farms and ranches.

He says there’s a great opportunity for young people to stay in agriculture if these technical training opportunities can be strengthened which he says this legislation will do.

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce has already approved this legislation. Nelson is hoping Congress will take it up when they return from their summer recess after Labor Day.
