The American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual July 4th cookout survey shows this year’s holiday meal is a real bargain for consumers, at less than $6 per person. Farm Bureau Economist Veronica Nigh says that’s an increase of less than one-percent from a year ago.
She says the summer cook-out item showing the largest drop in price compared to 2015 was meat. In fact, ground round, pork spare ribs and hot dogs all saw lower price tags.
Nigh says the menu item with the biggest price increase over last year is watermelon, due to some production issues.
A total of 79 Farm Bureau members, who were volunteer shoppers in 26 states, checked retail prices for summer cookout foods in mid-June at their local grocery stores for this informal survey.
