The Senate Finance Committee held a hearing this week on the USMCA trade agreement. And Farm Bureau Presidents meeting in the nation’s capital want Congress to get that NAFTA remake with Canada and Mexico over the finish line. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal says USMCA needs to get completed this year.
He says there are positive signs the USMCA could get moving and that some Democrats seem more open to it than in the past. VanderWal says House Speaker Nancy Pelosi needs to get it going.
VanderWal says another reason USMCA must be ratified is that it’s the jumping off point for other U.S. trade deals.
There’s a lot at stake with the USMCA. Former Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack who heads up the Dairy Export Council told the Senate Finance Committee the U.S. dairy industry stands to lose an additional $314 million in exports if we’re not part of the pact.
