Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders intends to introduce legislation next week that would make large companies pay for SNAP benefits their employees receive. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal says if that goes forward it could hold up debate on the farm bill.

Sander’s measure would impose a 100 percent tax on government benefits including food stamps received by workers at companies with 500 or more employees. VanderWal says that could result in companies shying away from hiring workers who need SNAP benefits.

He says Farm Bureau will keep watching what happens with both the Farm Bill and Sander’s legislation.

Sander’s is intending on putting his bill in the same day as conferees start meeting to work on the new farm bill.
