South Dakota Senator John Thune is urging Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue to prioritize implementation of the conservation and commodity title programs of the 2018 farm bill. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal agrees and says farmers and ranchers need certainty as they prepare for the economically challenging 2019 crop year.

He says the farm bill needs to get implemented as soon as possible because farmers are in the midst of planning ahead of spring planting.

VanderWal says while it’s important to prioritize the conservation title as well, it’s also imperative the original intention of the conservation program is followed.

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue will be testifying today in front of the Senate Agriculture Committee on the agency’s progress in implementing the 2018 farm bill.
