The European Union is looking to revive trade negotiations with the United States. EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan told US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer there is scope to reach an agreement. Nebraska Farm Bureau’s Director of National Affairs Jordan Dux says it’s encouraging the E.U. wants to move ahead but it’s imperative agriculture be a part of those discussions.
The E.U. has indicated they’re willing to look at reducing tariffs on car imports as well as pushing forward regulatory approval processes for meats and fruits. Dux says if they’re willing to move ahead on GMO approval and less regulations on livestock, that would be beneficial for Nebraska as well as the U.S.
Dux says while talks may take some time with the Europeans, the Trump administration has done a great job lately expediting trade discussions.
Commissioner Hogan says the E.U. is proposing a joint agenda that covers everything from aircraft subsidies and lobster tariffs to shared reserves of medical supplies.
