American Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall is calling for a workable guest worker program run by USDA as part of needed immigration reform. He says with the Trump administration moving aggressively on deportation it highlights the need to fix the immigrant worker problem. South Dakota Farm Bureau President Scott VanderWal who’s Vice President for the American Farm Bureau says agriculture will suffer if a guest worker program isn’t implemented.
He says with a hard stance on deportation and no guest worker program it could cost $60 billion in agriculture production. VanderWal says it also becomes a national and food security problem.
VanderWal says the immigration fix must include a program that allows for guest workers year round.
VanderWal says immigration reform is one of the topics his group is discussing at their issues advisory council meeting this week in Washington, D.C.
