A bipartisan group of Senators sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross asking the administration to conduct a robust economic analysis of the North American Free Trade Agreement. The Senators want the evaluation done to see how changes to NAFTA would affect U.S. agriculture. Iowa Farm Bureau President Craig Hill says that makes sense and it would be good to have that analysis done on all trade agreements.
He says any withdrawal or drastic changes to NAFTA would be very harmful to U.S. agriculture especially at a time when commodity prices are very low.
Hill says withdrawing from NAFTA could result in trade retaliation by Mexico and Canada.
The Senators letter came on the heels of the conclusion of the fifth round of NAFTA negotiations.
