Work on the dairy title in the new farm bill is not at a compromise point but back to square one. That’s according to National Milk Producer Federation’s Chris Galen who says House Speaker John Boehner won’t allow a vote on the dairy security act in the farm bill to proceed without major changes.
Galen says there is a possibility there could be a different structure that makes adjustments in the payouts of the dairy insurance program and the premium rates of the participants. He says their market stabilization supply management component won’t go forward however because the Speaker opposes that. Galen also says it’s disappointing they have to start over again.
House Ag Committee ranking member Collin Peterson who helped bring the dairy security act forward originally says he’s hopeful they can still get a farm bill to the floor the week of January 27 but Galen says it’s tough to tell when they’ll be able to do that.
