Farmers are wrapping up with harvest and taking advantage of the nice weather and applying fertilizer. Leah Ten Napel serves as the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Crops Specialist for northwest Iowa. She says now is the perfect time to apply fertilizer, including anhydrous ammonia. Ten Napel says farmers should be applying their anhydrous ammonia at least six to eight inches deep in the soil. She says farmers want to be certain the topsoil creates a cap for the anhydrous ammonia application. The Iowa State University Extension agronomist says many farmers in her area also raise livestock and are taking advantage of applying manure on their fields. She says farmers are racing against time before the weather changes which would prevent farmers from applying fall fertilizer either anhydrous ammonia, or manure. Ten Napel suggests farmers take several soil test analysis before applying their fall fertilizer in order to know exactly what nutrients the soil needs. The ISU Extension agronomist says many cooperative grain elevators can conduct the soil testing.
