Faculty members representing the largest college at the University of Iowa are calling for the dismissal of the Iowa Board of Regents. The action by the Faculty Assembly for the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is in response to the Regents’ hiring of business executive Bruce Harreld as the new University of Iowa president. Governor Terry Branstad rejected the UI faculty group’s request saying he couldn’t appoint new Regents even if he agreed with the group.
Branstad says he doesn’t have the authority to do what the faculty has requested.
Branstad has praised the Board of Regents decision to hire Bruce Harreld, who’s set to become the UI’s 21st president on November 2. Since the Board of Regents announced the selection of Harreld on September 3, the UI Faculty Senate, UI Student Government, and the Graduate and Professional Student Government have issued no-confidence votes in the board.
