The cold snap can bring with it problems for livestock that are exposed to it for long periods of time. SDSU Extension Vet Dr. Russ Daly says most producers know what to do and the most important thing is to make sure livestock are protected from severe cold, moisture and heavy winds.
Daly says it’s a good idea to adjust the animal’s ration but not to do it abruptly.
Daly says it’s critical to pay close attention to the calves and younger animals.
Daly also says to make sure that the livestock have good access to water. He says for a short period of time they might be able to get by with the moisture from the snow but keeping water thawed out should be a priority.
