New research by Academia and Natural Biologics published in the Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology provides insight into the fight against African Swine Fever. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says there have been and continue to be several research projects looking at feed and ASF. He says this study could provide a helpful tool but doesn’t eliminate African Swine Fever.
The latest research found that GML or glycerol monolaurate killed ASF and led to an over 99 percent reduction in the amount of infective virus. Daly says because it’s been successful in the lab doesn’t mean it gets rid of the African Swine Fever virus.
Daly says what researchers found in the new study may help reduce the spread of ASF but more study is needed as to how feed got contaminated in the first place.
Daly says it’s still critical for pork producers to practice biosecurity and to keep the African Swine Fever out of the United States.
