Northern Plains livestock producers will be up against high heat and humidity this week and the challenge for keeping cattle cool may be higher than usual. That’s due to the pandemic and the backlog of cattle due to processing plant snags. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says because of that, much of those cattle are heavier making it more of a challenge to keep them cool.

He says producers need to make sure they begin taking steps to keep their animals cool right away early in the day.

Daly says signs of heat stress in livestock often times appear in the evening rather than during the day.
