During periods of high heat and humidity, livestock producers are advised to watch their animals closely and start early with cooling steps. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says water, shade and proper bedding are all important.
Daly recommends sprinkling cattle but don’t mist them, make sure you use large droplets.
He also advises to change the animal’s feeding schedule and do that later in the day.
Daly says if you’re transporting animals to make sure and get it done early and be completed by 9 or 10 in the morning to avoid the hottest time of the day.
