Wet, Cold and Windy weather hitting this week in the Northern Plains is a drastic change to what we’ve seen so far this fall. Because of that, livestock are not acclimated to the weather. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says effects from this type of weather hits the immune systems of the animals and can make them more susceptible to disease.
Daly says while it’s important to monitor the feeding patterns of the animals don’t drastically alter their feed intake.
He advises follow the proper health program for the animals, make sure they’re vaccinated and also provide shelter when needed.
Daly says when the weather changes as quickly as it has this week, it makes it tough on animals as they try to adjust to it. He says pay particular attention to calves and lambs during this blast of wintry like weather.
