The primary time for managing noxious weeds is approaching in South Dakota. SDSU Extension Weed Science Coordinator Paul Johnson says because conditions were wet last year and much ground was partially or completely underwater, there wasn’t much weed control that was achieved. He says it’s important to control leafy spurge beginning right away in June along with Canada Thistle.
He says there is a good biological control tool that can be used on leafy spurge, that being flea beetles.
Johnson says while there aren’t any biological controls that can work on Canada Thistle, there are some alternative control methods that can be used.
Johnson says they also have chemical control recommendations listed on their noxious weed guide on their website at SDSU extension.
