The prolonged cold and subzero weather hitting the Northern Plains is a concern for livestock producers with animals outdoors. For those pork producers who have animals indoors there are some cold weather tips they should keep in mind. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says it’s critical there’s fresh ventilation for those hogs indoors.
He says it’s advisable not to make any changes in nutrition for their swine.
Thaler says not only is it critical to protect the animals but producers must take care of themselves as well with the subzero temperatures and dangerous wind chills.
Thaler says for those pork producers who have animals outdoors, make sure there’s access to bedding, water and feed.
