Extension Specialist Says Farm Safety Critical During Harvest

Fall harvest season is a very busy time for farmers and with everything happening so quickly it’s critical to stay alert. Iowa State University Extension Ag-Engineer Kris Kohl says there’s a lot of sileage cutting going on and some of the worst farm accidents he’ s seen happens during sileage harvest.

He says another common farm accident during harvest is people not watching out for slow moving agricultural equipment and running into those.

Kohl says roll over accidents are also quite common during harvest time.

Kohl says one common accident they see is where a tractor pulling equipment turns and people meeting it can’t see and end up colliding with it. The other problem is that cabs are so quiet so it’s critical the operator is aware of where others are as there have been incidents of a person walking in the field and getting pulled into the combine.
