The extreme heat continues this week compounding the impacts of this year’s drought in the Northern Plains. University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Feedlot and Nutrition Management Specialist Dr. Pablo Loza advises making sure cattle have enough water and sprinkling systems are working well.
He says a lot of times when temperatures rise into the upper 90s into the century mark, cattle may stop eating which creates management problems. Loza says when conditions return to normal, then the cattle may over eat.
Loza says the drought has caused feed shortages in some areas which has tightened supplies.
Loza says the drought has caused some producers to sell of their herds earlier than normal.
