The onslaught of early winter type weather in much of South Dakota is presenting even more challenges for farmers trying to get their crops harvested. Much of the corn and soybeans went in late, so harvest has already been delayed. SDSU Extension Agronomy Field Specialist David Karki says most of the soybeans he’s observed are either mature or close to it. He says the hope is that once the system finishes up on Saturday, that next week will see drier weather.
He says it’ll be a challenge for producers to get their corn dried down enough to harvest with this winter system coming through and one option may be to chop it for sileage.
Karki says another challenge is that with all the prevented plant acres this year, there were some cover crops that went in and getting them out maybe difficult.
Karki says producers want to make sure they proceed cautiously with any of their harvest activities and to be safe out there when they can go.
