Extension Agronomist Says Heavy Rains Causing Erosion Problems In Northwest Iowa

Rain this week that came heavy and hard in Northwest Iowa has created more challenges for local growers. Rainfall amounts varied from 2 and a quarter inches in Lemars up to two to three inches further North. ISU Extension Field Agronomist Joel DeJong says the soggy conditions have caused a lot of soil erosion.

He says the areas that got planted have enough moisture in the soil profile so any heavy amounts don’t help.

DeJong says many farmers were able to plant a lot of corn in Northwest Iowa last month so there’s not much prevent plant, but there is some along the Minnesota-Iowa border.

DeJong says heavy rains this week also created some runoff problems for feedlots because there isn’t anywhere for the moisture to go.
