Crop insurance indemnities for this year are at $1.266 billion so far this year compared to $ 2.53 billion for all of 2015. Environmental Working Group’s Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources Craig Cox says there needs to be some changes to the overall crop insurance program to make it better for not only the farmer but also for the taxpayer.
He says there should be one basic crop insurance revenue policy that assists farmers.
Cox says currently there are too many types of subsidy programs and those need to be streamlined.
Some lawmakers are looking for budget savings when the new farm bill is put together and some of that could be targeted at crop insurance.
