The Environmental Protection Agency is taking public comment today in Kansas City on their RFS proposal. Over 250 Corn growers from several states including South Dakota are on hand to testify and then hold a rally. South Dakota Corn Growers President Keith Alverson says their main message to EPA is that the RFS is working and they need to get the volume obligations up to the statutory levels.
EPA’s proposal cuts the renewable fuel standard for corn ethanol by 3.75 billion gallons through 2016. Alverson says the main effect on South Dakota if that proposal holds up is the negative impact it’ll have on the market.
Alverson says another reason the EPA proposal doesn’t make sense is that it results in the only program that reduces carbon pollution being cut. He says that doesn’t make any sense given the Administration’s wishes to combat climate change.
