The Environmental Protection Agency is launching a pilot program called the Nutrient Recycling Challenge. The EPA is partnering with the USDA, pork and dairy producers and environmental and scientific experts. The goal is to develop affordable technologies that recycle nutrients from livestock waste. National Pork Producers Council Assistant Vice President of Domestic Affairs Michael Formica says pork producers have been reaping the nutrient value of manure and this is a way to build on that.

Formica says the hardest part will be in finding and developing new technologies.

He credits EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy for working with producers in a positive way by developing this program.

During the four phase competition innovators will turn their concept and eventually into working technologies that livestock farmers use in the pilot project.
