State pesticide regulators are concerned the Environmental Protection Agency is considering limiting the state’s ability to place additional restrictions on federal pesticides. Under Section 24(c) of the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, state pesticide departments are authorized to regulate additional use of federally registered pesticide products to meet a local special need if certain conditions exist. NASDA Vice President Doug Goehring says they’ve written the EPA asking them not to limit 24c.
He says some states have different situations than others and that needs to be taken into account when regulating pesticides.
Goehring says each state also needs to be able to provide clarity to its producers on pesticide regulations.
Goehring says most states already address regulatory issues the EPA has with pesticides. He says the 24c provision has worked well in the past and should be left alone.
