Environmental Working Group leaders says the decision by Congress to possibly cut the government guaranteed profits of crop insurance companies will not cripple the industry. EWG Senior Economic Analyst Anne Weir says their study shows the profit margin for crop insurance providers is well above the rate of return seen by the industry as a whole.
She says the budget savings generated by the proposed cuts of $3 billion over ten years will not negatively impact crop insurance companies or farmers.
Weir says EWG will work with Congress to move forward with the proposed cuts to crop insurance. However, she says they want funding restored for conservation programs.
Weir says her group is also backing a bill recently introduced in Congress calling for additional cuts to crop insurance.
