Changes in the Biden Administration’s energy and climate policy have major implications for agriculture and South Dakota Senator John Thune is optimistic they can be long term positives. However, he says the halting of the Keystone XL Pipeline project and the murky future for the Dakota Access Pipeline could put the ability to transport agricultural goods and energy at risk. He hopes there isn’t a repeat of the transportation crisis in 2014.
Thune heads the Senate Commerce Committee which dealt with the rail and transportation meltdown. He says transporting energy via the pipeline is a win-win for commerce and the environment.
Renewable energy sources stand to win under the Biden Administration’s climate change policy and Thune says all of agriculture can benefit. He says he’s talked with many farm groups about their interest in a carbon credit market.
Thune says ag groups need to speak together with one voice to make sure they get what they want and deserve out of the climate change agenda.
