Weather experts are watching sea surface temperatures in the western Pacific Ocean for signs of a developing El Nino. When that water warms, it can have dramatic effects on the weather in North America.
South Dakota State Climatologist Dennis Todey says it looks like the warming water has slowed a bit.

Todey says those sea temperatures are still rising, just not as rapidly.

Past El Niño’s have been linked to milder winters, and wetter summers in the northern plains.
