Egg Prices Climb Due to Bird Flu

Consumers are feeling the lasting effects of the Avian Influenza outbreak in the Midwest in the form of higher egg prices. Iowa Farm Bureau Economist David Miller says the loss of over 48 million turkeys and chickens and the slow repopulation of infected egg laying facilities in Iowa has taken its toll.

He says that egg production loss is showing up in the grocery store with a big hike in prices, in some cases more than a 50-percent increase.

Miller says turkey prices haven’t seen the same rally or price reaction. That’s because there are better substitutes for turkey meat…including ham and chicken.
