McDonald’s Corporation has announced it’s calling for its poultry suppliers to phase out the use of antibiotics by January of next year. National Association of Egg Farmers President Ken Klippen says that’s a misguided move by the corporation that will just result in higher prices for McDonalds and its producers as well as consumers.
He says McDonald’s decision on antibiotics will lead to other companies making the same move much as it did with the cage free issue.
McDonald’s is calling for its antibiotic phase out in the U.S. ,Canada, Brazil, Japan and South Korea in 2018 and in Australia and Russia in 2019. Klippen says all of those countries are demanding more protein and the phase out will be costly for them as well.
McDonald’s is said to be working on a similar phase out of antibiotics for its beef, and dairy suppliers as well.
